History

Born in a small clinic in Lavender Town, Yuichi was raised by only his mother in a small cottage located deep in the forest to the southwest of Lavender Town. He spent his earliest days climbing trees and playing with the young wild Pokemon that lived near the cottage. From dawn to dusk, he spent the majority of his time roaming the forest and only returned home when he was hungry or scraped his hands and knees from falling down a ledge. His mother hardly worried about his safety since her faithful Persian was tasked with babysitting (a bad decision since it liked to take catnaps on the job).

A few days after his fourth birthday, his happy little life in the forest came to an abrupt end. A man from town had been trying and failing to court his mother. After too many rejections, the man arrived in the dead of night to take her life before turning the knife on himself. Yuichi witnessed the entire thing from beneath the bed, a hand clasped over his mouth per his mother's instructions, and her Persian covering his body with its own protectively.

Yuichi could only blame himself. Had she not ordered the Persian to stay with him, perhaps it could have protected her.

No one knew of what had transpired that night but Yuichi and the Pokemon. He was never told what to do in the event of an emergency other than hide, so the authorities were never notified. With the help of the wild Pokemon, he was able to bury his mother in the garden (the man was burned instead). He struggled to clean up, and he broke down as soon as he was done.

He was found two years later by a pair of trainers. Rather, he found them as they tried to battle and capture one of the wild Pokemon that frequented his cottage. They were livid to have their Pokeball hit out of the air by a large stick, but their complaints died down once they noticed the scrawny child holding the stick. Switching gears, they bribed him with a bar of chocolate and earned the right to see where he lived.

The cottage had fallen into disrepair. Yuichi did not have the means or know-how to maintain it, but he managed to keep his mother's garden in prime condition. Weaker wild Pokemon wandered in and out of the cottage, and a large Persian lounged on the roof. Yuichi answered the trainers' questions with broken sentences and only when they rewarded him with more snacks.

They left after an hour. He figured that was the end.

More people in dark attire arrived the next morning, and Yuichi was woken by the snarling of the Persian. The cat was subdued, and Yuichi was kicking and screaming as he was easily grabbed and hoisted over someone's shoulder. He was bound and blindfolded before being tossed in the back of their vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, they captured many of the Pokemon that tried to take a stand, the Persian included.

The next handful of years began to bleed together after that event. He was taken to an academy in an undisclosed location, had a red uniform forced upon him, and was tossed into a dormitory with a bunch of older kids. They were more adjusted to their current situation, all of which were there voluntarily, unlike Yuichi. Their relationship with Yuichi was strained for the first year (especially after he bit a kid and scratched another for a poor first impression), but they gradually warmed up to one another as time went on.

He reached his teens after many years of training and studying, and he was the last to graduate from the original group in his dormitory due to his age. Graduation immediately led to work instead of the freedom he had yearned for, not that it was ever promised to begin with. Paired up with another graduating classmate, they were handed black uniforms and sent on their first mission. It was nothing more than a simple assist the B Rank agent with their mission, and further orders were given then. Find the thing, steal the thing, let the superior get all the credit. Easy.

As the lowest on the totem pole, missions like this became a common occurrence, and Yuichi only put up with it because he was gunning for a promotion. A promotion that would never come. One risky mission when he was seventeen led to their first failure, and Yuichi's team was to be used as the scapegoat.

In the midst of the chaos (they might have accidentally blown up a building), Yuichi slipped away, abandoning his partner and the organization-assigned Pokemon (he figured they were tracking the Pokeball). He scraped together his savings, changed out of his uniform, and let his hair down for the first time in nearly a decade. He travelled to Johto before boarding a ship to Unova. After a few months of sightseeing, he decided to head to the Hurricane Region.

Why? Because the name was cool.
